Alfred and I have collaborated on several mathematical projects over the past 30 years: it is a pleasure to do these things with a very good friend. We shared many common interests outside of mathematics - in particular - gastronomy and powerful cars. A very memorable event was at a conference when the current speaker was not so inspiring and Alfred suggested " we could miss the next talk and take my new V12 out on the local autobahn until the next exit and still be back for the coffee break ? "
A man with true mathematical talent, good taste in life, and a wonderful sense of humour.
